7 Things To Look Out For When Dealing With A Travel Agency

When searching for a travel agency, it is important to not solely focus on price, as there are other factors to consider that can save you time, money, and prevent headaches during your trip planning process.

1. Verify ASTA Membership

When researching travel agencies, it is important to verify if they are members of ASTA (American Society of Travel Agents). ASTA members are required to adhere to strict codes of conduct and in the event of any issues, it will be easier to file a complaint.

2. Avoid Unrealistic Promises

Be cautious of offers that seem too good to be true. The travel industry is highly competitive, and some agencies may make unrealistic promises. Ensure that the agency can deliver on its promises before committing to their services.

3. Ensure Contact Information is Legit

It is important to ensure the agency provides their full contact information, including name, address, phone number, and email address. You should be able to find this information easily. Verify their phone number by calling and see if a real person answers. If their contact information is not readily accessible, it may be best to consider other options.

4. Be Aware of Hidden Fees

Be aware that some agencies may advertise low rates to attract customers, but then charge hidden fees. These hidden costs can cause your bill to be larger than expected and can impact your budget for the trip. To avoid surprises, be sure to get all agency rates and fees in writing, so you have a clear understanding of the total cost.

5. Customer Service is Important

Reputable travel agencies will go above and beyond to ensure that their customers are well taken care of, especially when it comes to any medical needs while traveling. Agencies that prioritize quick financial gain may not provide the level of customer service you need. To ensure that your special requests are accommodated, ask questions about the agency’s policies and procedures before making a commitment.

6. Support During Travel is Essential

A reliable travel agency will provide ongoing support during and after your trip to ensure that everything goes smoothly. They will be available to assist you in case of any issues that may arise during your trip. Fly-by-night services, on the other hand, may disappear once they have received payment. It is crucial to research and check the agency’s reputation before committing to any deal.

7. Expertise is Key

A credible travel agency will have access to a wealth of information about the destination you are visiting. They can provide valuable insider tips for different types of travel, including business, family, air travel and packing. If they are providing you with little information or guidance, consider switching to a more knowledgeable agency.

In conclusion, when searching for a travel agency, it’s crucial to look beyond the price tag. Taking into account other factors such as reliability, customer reviews, and comprehensive services can make a significant difference in saving you time, money, and unnecessary stress. By making a well-informed decision, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip planning experience that meets your budget and travel needs.

If you are looking for red flags, start by verifying their accreditation and licensing status, and check for a clear physical presence and contact information. Reading genuine customer reviews and scrutinizing pricing for hidden fees can reveal a lot about their reliability. Longevity and a transparent history matter, so research how long they’ve been in business. Request references and investigate their financial protection measures. Steer clear of overly aggressive sales tactics and unusual payment methods, and always read the fine print. Seeking recommendations from trusted friends and family is often valuable. Lastly, ensure they offer suitable travel insurance options. By following these tips, you can better distinguish between trustworthy agencies and those potentially engaged in deceptive practices.

  2. Hi Andrew, this is a very helpful and informative post for anyone who wants to travel with a travel agency. It covers all the important aspects and criteria that one should consider when choosing a travel agency. It also provides some useful tips and examples to illustrate each point.

One way to check the reliability and quality of a travel agency is to look at and validate the reviews from customers who have used the service by the travel agency before. Reviews can provide you with honest and unbiased feedback about the travel agency’s performance, service, products, and customer satisfaction. However, you should be careful because not all reviews are trustworthy or accurate. Some reviews may be fake, paid, biased, or outdated.

  3. This is insightful information about travel agencies. I have never used one to plan a vacation for my family, although I have thought about. I even have several friends that are independent travel agents, usually for Disney, but they say they can plan other vacations and destinations, as well. They tell us that they can plan a vacation with no extra charge than planning it alone because they are paid by the hotels and/or other destinations. Is they a good way to plan a vacation?

    1. Yes! Reputable travel agents are an invaluable source of knowledge to help you plan any vacation. They can plan an incredible vacation, with no extra charge, to really maximize your budget and experiences.
